Paintless Dent Repair for Cars & Trucks in West Monroe, LA

3 min read

Steel and aluminum body panels have memory. A shallow dent pushes the metal out of shape without stretching it, and with the right access and the right tool, the panel can be coaxed back to its original contour without filler, primer, or paint. That is paintless dent repair, and at Redeemed Auto Body in West Monroe, LA it is the first method we consider for any dent where the paint is still intact.

Why keeping the factory paint matters

Factory paint is applied and baked in conditions no shop can fully reproduce. It is the most durable finish your vehicle will ever have. Every time a panel is refinished, the vehicle loses a little of that, and a repainted panel shows up on a paint depth gauge to any future buyer or appraiser.

Paintless dent repair leaves the factory finish alone. The panel is not sanded, filled, or sprayed. When the work is done there is nothing to blend and no cure time. For a vehicle you plan to keep or sell, that is a meaningful difference.

What qualifies

A good candidate for paintless repair usually has all of the following:

  • Paint is unbroken. No cracks, chips, or scuffs through the clear coat in the dent.
  • The dent is shallow and rounded. Sharp creases and dents with a hard edge have stretched the metal and usually need conventional repair.
  • There is access behind the panel. Doors, hoods, trunk lids, roofs, and quarter panels typically allow access through existing openings or by removing trim. Double-wall areas and structural braces limit it.
  • The dent is not on a tight body line. Dents on a crease can be improved but not always fully removed.
  • The panel is steel or a repairable aluminum alloy. Aluminum has less memory and takes longer, and some high-strength panels are not candidates.

Typical jobs: door dings from parking lots, dents from a dropped tool or a basketball, a shopping cart in a quarter panel, minor hail, and small dents on a truck bed side.

How the repair is done

  1. Reading the dent. A line board or LED reflector is placed so its lines reflect in the panel. The distortion in the reflection shows the exact shape and extent of the dent, including the low spots and high spots the eye misses.
  2. Getting access. Trim, a taillight, or an inner panel liner is removed to reach the back side of the dent.
  3. Pushing from behind. Long steel rods with shaped tips apply pressure to the low area in small, controlled pushes. The technician works from the outside edge toward the center, watching the reflection change.
  4. Glue pulling where needed. On panels with no rear access, a tab is glued to the dent and pulled with a lifter, then the surface is refined.
  5. Tapping down high spots. Any areas pushed slightly proud are tapped back with a knockdown tool.
  6. Final inspection. The reflection is checked from several angles and the trim is reinstalled.

A single door ding is often done in under an hour. You can wait for it.

Cost and value

Because there are no materials to buy and no refinishing time, paintless dent repair costs a fraction of a conventional repair on the same panel. Many of these repairs come in below a typical insurance deductible, so most customers pay directly rather than filing a claim. Where the dent is part of a larger insurance repair, the paintless method is written into the estimate.

When we recommend something else

If the paint is cracked, the metal is stretched, or the dent is on a brace with no access, we will tell you. Pushing a panel that has stretched only makes it worse. Those repairs move to conventional body work and refinishing in our booth, and the estimate explains why.

Paintless dent repair questions

Will the dent come back?

No. Once the metal is returned to its original shape it stays there. There is no filler to shrink or paint to crack.

Can you do it on a leased vehicle?

Yes. Paintless repair is the preferred method for lease returns because it leaves the factory finish intact and avoids refinish charges.

Do you repair hail damage this way?

Yes, on panels where the dents qualify. See our hail damage repair page for how storm damage is assessed panel by panel.
